Things to Be Noticed of Working with Silicone Adhesives and Sealants

If you've ever been in an industrial environment, chances are you've encountered silicone glue and sealants. Silicone adhesive sealant is versatile, but unlike other glues, it requires curing. Curing simply means allowing it to dry, and while it's not particularly difficult, it does require patience. Silicone adhesives can cure in as little as 24 hours, but for thicker sealants, it may take several days. Here are some tips and tricks to help you make the most of silicone adhesives and sealants.

Utilize a Primer When Possible

Primer is invaluable as it helps the sealant adhere to your chosen surface better. While some primers have a short shelf life, they can improve adhesion by up to 20%. There are solvent-based primers available that can be applied with a brush or cloth to enhance your bond.

Take Note of The Sealant's Shelf Life

Most sealants on the market today cure at a rate of 2-3mm per 24 hours, which is why they don't last indefinitely in the tube. Their shelf life can be especially short in hot and humid conditions. Storing them in the refrigerator can extend their lifespan, and keeping nozzles attached can also slow down curing. Of course, avoid opening the tubes until you're ready to use them.

Prepare Your Workspace

Consider that other people, and even pets, might come into contact with the area you're working in, so ensure your silicone applicator is safely out of reach of children and animals. Choose a well-ventilated work area if your adhesive has a strong odor.

Method for Sealant Removal

The only way to remove sealant is through mechanical means, such as using a cheese wire or sharp knife, or by sanding it away.

Choosing The Wrong Adhesive

Before purchasing silicone glue or sealant for your project, check the materials you'll be working with. There are specific adhesives designed for different materials. Here's a guide to selecting the right silicone for your project.

For industrial applications like engines, oil pans, and transmissions, RTV silicone is recommended. For a general-purpose, durable sealant suitable for a wide range of industrial applications, consider Window Silicone Sealant. It also adheres well to non-porous surfaces like glass and metals. For substrates such as aluminum, brass, steel, mortar, granite, marble, wood, and many plastics, Polymer Modified Urethane Sealant is an excellent option.

Checking The Expiry Date

Before purchasing silicone adhesives and sealants, ensure they're not expired. This is a small detail that's easily overlooked. Expired silicone sealant undergoes changes and takes longer to dry, rendering it less effective.

Neglecting Surface Cleaning

If there's any grime, oil, grease, or other residues on the surfaces you're working with, it'll be challenging to achieve a solid bond. Thoroughly clean surfaces and let them dry before proceeding with your work.

Ignoring Instructions

Different types of sealants and adhesives come with slightly different instructions, particularly regarding drying times. Some strong adhesives may require mixing with other substances before use. Always read and follow the instructions carefully.

Failure to Apply Pressure

Bonding two metal pieces together isn't the same as gluing paper and waiting for it to dry on its own. Pressure must be applied to ensure a strong bond. A vise or clamp can hold the pieces together with firm pressure, allowing the adhesive to bond properly to the prepared metal surfaces. Wait as long as necessary before removing the clamp to allow the adhesive ample time to dry. Avoid rushing the process, or you may encounter problems later on.

Good adhesives also require good tools to assist them, so that your product bonding can be more efficient. As a professional static mixer manufacturer, Haijing offers disposable static mixers that can make your glue mixing process exceptionally simple, with precise control over proportions, enabling you to achieve the most satisfactory results.
